I havn't posted anything of note in awhile so here I am writing a review of Within Temptation's Silent Force cd. It's good, it's really, REALLY good, if you like heavy metal, rock, opera, fantasy epic tunes...
I can safely say that lead singer Sharon Den Adel has the most beautiful voice I have EVER heard!
CD listing (for Western release)
1. Intro: An instrumental with Sharon singing epic notes which leads perfectly into
2. See Who I am: A song about accepting other people and trying to understand each other, rather than growing angry. I love this and the intro... 5/5 for both
3. Jillian (I'd give my heart): A song about Jill and Nevyn from Katharine Kerr's Deverry Saga. Utterly... brilliant!!! First song of WT's I heard and still a fave with my brother and I, especially the quiet but compelling pain in Sharon's voice when she sings "Jillian, our dream had ended long ago/all our stories and all our glories we held so deep..." Anyone who likes Deverry go listen to this song now :P 5/5
4. Stand my Ground: The most mainstream song on the cd and the most boring- having said that boring WT is better than most bands best. 3/5
5. Pale: Celtic inspired ballad piece. It took me a couple of listens to get into it but its good. 4/5
6. Forsaken: Ok, how do I describe this song? It's prefect and its one of my faves on this cd. "No the day has come, we are forsaken this time, life shall pass us by, we are forsaken, there's no time anymore." A very sad song about climate change and how our refusal to do anything about it will lead to the earth's destruction. 6/5
7. Angels: Starts off sweet and pretty but becomes a song about betrayal and obsession. Another near perfect song. 5/5
8. Memories: A short but sweet song that brought tears into my eyes the first time I listened. 4/5
9. Aquarius: This song grew on me but is a bit of a filler piece to me. 3/5
10. It's the fear: This song also grew but in a good way. A song about humanity's capacity for darkness. 4/5
11. Somewhere: A beautiful ballad that again could bring tears to the eye. "I'll find you somewhere..." 5/5
Bonus Tracks for US and Australia and UK:
12. Destroyed. Ok bloody love this song. "It's so eay to destroy and condemn, the ones you do not understand, do you ever wonder if its justified?" 5/5
13. Jane Doe: The most metal and gritty song on the album, complete with male growls. A song about a man who has to kill the one he loves because she knows about the crime he committed, but he always regrets it. Sharon is astounding on this track, that really deserves to be on the cd proper. "Why, you just won't leave my mind, why, was this the only way? I couldn't let you stay" 6/5
If you're in Europe the two European bonus songs are equally brilliant too :)
If you like alternative music, this is a must buy CD.
