Whelp. We're getting started this month [personal profile] nightbulbs, [personal profile] novindalf, [profile] twcardiff and everyone else keen to go back to the start when cats and hairdryers and Malcolm and Zoe were a thing... sorta.

That's right. July is the month of Tom, Danny and Zoe, the deep fat fryer, hard nosed Tessa and Harry being a great character. Let's go... Spooks s1 in July starts NOW!

I had a bit of a day at work yesterday so what better way to relax than with episodes of Foyle's War? Now I know that some didn't like the transition to The Cold War and the move from straight out policeman to MI5 operative, but I find it really interesting. It's like an early Spooks/Foyle cross-over with loads of research. I actually even liked Sam's new husband, Adam, and his story of being an early post war Labor MP and the pressures that put on Sam (also though I like Max Brown, he never worked with Weeks for me). I like that the whole proceedings are gloomy looking and cynical and world weary. It feels realistic after the pomp of V Day.

I watched Sunflower. It was the best of the three by far, perhaps even one of the best episodes ever of Foyle's War and that ending!

Thoughts?

So I finally watched episode one. I should probably make a thread in the [profile] nicola_walker comm seeings as it is well and truly done and dusted in the UK.

Anyway, I found the episode relatively intriguing plot wise, but I hated every single main character. Every. Last. One. And it was also pretty damn depressing. Probably not my cup of tea to be honest but I'll watch to the end BECAUSE ZOMG THAT ACTRESS I LIKE (the story of my life- watching programs I don't like for actors I love)

Also, lol at the returned stereotype of Nicola's character in a bad/unfufilling relationship stuck in a world of social and emotional dislocation. How predictable ;)

The most important thing however, is Nicola getting costume changes you guys. MANY. Tv is full of surprises. Random stripey jumper/top thingy was love. I wants one.

On Tuesday, Mum, my brother and I went and saw the live version finale of Spicks and Specks. After over 200 episodes, 7 series and many laughs at Hamish's expense, Adam, Alan and Myf are saying goodbye around Australia. I cannot lie. My heart may just be a little bit broken by the exit of a comedy music quiz show. But really guys. The ABC had the best Wednesday line up happening. If it wasn't Chris Lilley, it was the Chaser Boys or Margaret and David and The Gruen Transfer/Planet, and always, steady as a rock, Spicks and Specks: my university blues tonic that got me through the week till Saturday night and Doctor Who. It's the end of an era. I've been watching this show since I was about 16. Maybe even earlier.

spoilers for the show )

My love affair with HBC continues...

Pics under the cut for images of her as Miss Havisham in Great Expectations and Julia in Dark Shadows. Both come out in 2012. I. am. excited.

beauty is always only an illusion Merlin. Didn't you know that? )

Who likes Helena on my flist? Excited for any of her up and coming films? Tell me about them!

ps: Looks like she is confirmed for Madame Thernadier in Les Miserables. YES. SQUEE!!!!!!

I am convinced disaster is imminent! The trainwreck is hurtling faster and faster at me! The ridiculous will break the Richter Scale.

I am not going to watch this episode for a week or two. I must phych myself up for it. IF ANYONE SPOILERS ME HERE OR ON FACEBOOK I WILL KILL YOU. OK?

Goodnight my dear flist! Every Spooks fan has been amazing! GOOD LUCK WITH DEALING AND SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE!!!

Can someone please explain this Moffuckery of an episode in simple language please... I spent the entire 45 mins in a sea of WHAAAA???????

ps: In other news, Nicola Walker is a God Damned Goddess. I already knew this. But of late multiple things have proved this to me further.

Identity

I did a swap with my friend. s5 of Doctor Who for Identity. We swap back next week. I've just watched the first episode and boy have I missed having Keeley around on my screen. Even if her character didn't do anything for most of the pilot.

So flist, you got any Keeley icons for me;) but really

I've been meaning to write Spooks meta forever but I kept putting it off because I have so much to say, not all of which is complimentary. I love Spooks as a show (most of the time), I love the characters, the actors and the whole "spying thing." I based the title for this post off Neil Gaiman's 'The Problem of Susan': a critical response to C.S.Lewis' treatment of Susan Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia. This is because I believe as a writer that critical engagement with a text is important.

In a later post, I will look back and highlight things that have been problematic for Spooks for awhile now (circa s4 and 5) but first I really think I need to deal with Spooks, series nine as myself and [livejournal.com profile] the_silverdoe keep spamming up our flist's entries with random Nine Meta and I feel sorry for my poor flist.

There has been so much fandom wank over series nine. So much so that it is very difficult to have an opinion on the matter anywhere but your own blog. It was this wankery that had me leave the forums due to refusal to allow alternative opinions and fan silencing. I was labelled weird things like "intellectual snob" for pointing out the very obvious... "Lucas and John SAY WHAT?" But the thing is, I'm not one to be silenced and I feel like if I just write this all out I will feel alot better and stop annoying everyone with my meta left, right and centre.

I am nothing/well if you say so )

I've always had a strange relationship with Harry Potter: the books. I always felt that J K Rowling sold out in book six and seven and the pace got very uneven. That's not to say I didn't appreciate the world she created and the characters I came to love and the way that part of my childhood is caught up in each books pages. But having said that, this is the reason I went to DH:p1 with so much trepidation as I didn't like Book 7 all that much. I was pleasantly surprised when I found it to be the strongest movie that had been released so far. I also was given an extra treat in that I thought Bellatrix Lestrange truly elevated herself above EVERYONE and really, really encapsulated the essence of evil. It was an astonishing performance from Helena and I think it is now impossible to seperate her from the character. I really feel that Helena brought a lot to the role of Bellatrix, she was born to play the part.

Actual film under cut link for part two:

I think the last two films have been the strongest because the art direction really picked up (very Burtonish I noticed), the storytelling cut straight to the heart of the books even if that meant adding in or taking away scenes from the source material and finally, the atmostphere and the drama was exactly right. Deathly Hallows Part One and Two succeeded in a way the previous Potter's haven't done. They convinced me that these were movies in their own right with strong themes and performances that had real lasting dramatic resonance.

You follow a Spooks link to a website on the new eight part tv series entitled World Without End because Peter Firth has been cast in it and discover Miranda Richardson's gorgeous face on your screen and then get excited because this lovely lady hasn't been in anything substantial in like forever (and yes I am aware of Made in Dagenham) and frankly is far, far more exciting a cast edition than Peter Firth... after all who could ever forget Queen Mab in Merlin or the chillingly cold mother in Wah Wah or the stepmother in Sleepy Hollow or Manda scarring me for life as a kid in Chicken Run or THREE PARTS AT ONCE IN SPIDER. THREE. MIRANDA RICHARDSON SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OSCAR THAT YEAR I TELL YOU.

Also, when you remember Helena Bonham Carter has been cast in Great Expectatons as Ms Havisham and might even be up for the Tom Hooper movie version of Les Miserables as Madame Thernadier. Life doesn't get any better...

Ok, so thanks to [livejournal.com profile] madama_airlock I know Alex is at the London con on July 10th AND I AM IN LONDON THEN. However, Karen is there on the 9th! WHICH POSES THE PROBLEM OF WHICH DAY DO I CHOOSE. If I got Saturday I get to stay the whole day and meet Karen (hopefully) but I would prefer to meet Alex on the Sunday. However, the thing is, I have to leave London by like 12 30pm to get to Oxford on the Sunday for 4pm. If the con is on Sunday at 9am and ends at 6pm, isn't that pushing it a lot to even factor in Alex? OH HELP ME PLEASE FLIST. DR WHO IS TORTURING ME AGAIN.

So apparently I suck at quitting jobs. I went and spoke to my store manager about me going overseas, thinking I was fired and he was all "WHAAA NO... YOU'RE COMING STRAIGHT BACK ON THIS ROSTER THE SECOND YOU IS BACK IN THE COUNTRY. I WENT AND ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGERS AND THEY ALL SAID YOU WERE RELIABLE. I DON'T WANT TO WASTE TIME TRAINING A NEW PERSON..." etc Me:??? I was all prepared to get a new job and everything too...

Hi to my Nicola friends,

The [livejournal.com profile] nicolawalker comm has finally been declared defunct in favour of the fan site. It has been scarcely functioning ever since I joined it, which is a real shame in my eyes because livejournal is a different medium to a fan site and a lot can be done in a community.

So to fill this void, and because I know a lot of you guys, like me were members of the old comm, I have created a new comm [livejournal.com profile] nicola_walker just now and would love some members so we can share fan art, icons, fan mixes and vids, fan fics, cos play, meta on characters and have watch-a-long and reaction posts to Nicola episodes and radio plays. I have seen a love fest comm work really astonishingly well with [livejournal.com profile] the_willows [livejournal.com profile] doctoreleven and I don't see any reason why we can't recreate that great vibe within another fandom! Any suggestions are welcome in the introduction post.

Come out and play Nicola fans! Her episode of Being Human airs in Australia tomorrow night so I thought we could kick things off with a Being Human rewatch/reaction post of squee :) If you know anyone else who is interested feel free to ask them to join the comm too. The more the merrier for sure!

Also, [livejournal.com profile] novindalf has her own comm over at [livejournal.com profile] hermione_norris if there are Ros fans on my lj. Also, if you wanted Nia, I thought your comm and my comm could affiliate. It would make sense to try and link all of the Spooks related comms together eventually :)

Dr Who Love

It's things like this that remind me why;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggppYfXSGdg&feature=related

a) Dr Who is the greatest fandom in the universe ever!
b) The frik don't I live in the UK so I can go to these things?
c) How great Murry Gold has consistently been as composer and omfg if my brother doesn't get me the series five soundtrack for my birthday I will kill him ;)
d) How much I can't flipping wait for series six to air April 30th here!

Having played the alto saxophone for nine years, I do love soundtracks of any kind. One of my Eastern Europe tour highlights was going to a Viennese Orchestral Concert and talking shop with another musical guy on my tour. It does surprise me though that a tv show can have such a cinematic sounding soundtrack which let's face it, is better than a lot of the stuff we hear out of Hollywood.

Karen Gillan was right in the first part of the Proms when she said that this kind of thing is something kids will remember for the rest of their lives. It's just so epic!

I haven't enjoyed Dr Who this much since I was a little kid watching dodgy VCR library copies of old Who with my Dad and brother. I love that this new new series is a fairytale of hope and that the soundtrack reflects this. I am the Doctor is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard and it and Amy's Theme can move me to tears (the only other composer who has managed that is the great Danny Elfman in films like Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow).

Oh why don't I just say it. WELCOME BACK DR WHO. WELCOME BACK.

DREAD THE 30TH GUYS. THERE WILL BE SQUEE ALL OVER THIS LJ.

So if I get into the Oxford Summer Program I can see Keeley in Rocket to the Moon at The National and stand outside that stage door of legends again ;) I better not mention this to my Mum. She may kill me. Cross your fingers for me please. I find out hopefully by the end of this week :)

Also, I can't contain myself anymore. Two of my flist met Nicola Walker on the weekend. Seeings as Nicola's run at The National is over I feel my Nicola related flist should comment with some Nicola love.

Heck. Stuff that. Hey flist. Just comment with any kind of love really. I'm not fussy.

ps: I do realise this post is ridiculous in light of the events in Japan. I am thinking of them and praying for them. But I guess there is nothing we can do other than show our support for them and donate to worthwhile charities who can work with Japan. I guess it just upsets me so much that I feel the need to be frivilous? But I don't have my head in the sand. It's horrible.

Still let's be cheerful flist. Share some fandom love :)

My offerings:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg2euuFh2cU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4JZMkIr4M8&feature=related- funniest interview ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFP5cxxQqnU - For the nostalgia value

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lhdZqG_zcE&feature=fvwrel- Ditto ;)

Now spread the love to the comments ;) Regale me with your Nicola photos, with your stage door stories, with icons and gifs and quotes and your favourite fandoms.
