Life and fandom fun
Jun. 1st, 2011 10:51 pmSo apparently I suck at quitting jobs. I went and spoke to my store manager about me going overseas, thinking I was fired and he was all "WHAAA NO... YOU'RE COMING STRAIGHT BACK ON THIS ROSTER THE SECOND YOU IS BACK IN THE COUNTRY. I WENT AND ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGERS AND THEY ALL SAID YOU WERE RELIABLE. I DON'T WANT TO WASTE TIME TRAINING A NEW PERSON..." etc Me:??? I was all prepared to get a new job and everything too...
I did lots of study today. So much that my brain fried and I wrote on a piece of paper "TOUCHING EVIL OR DEATH BY CULTURAL THEORY OR CULTURAL HISTORY... YOU CHOOSE GUYS" and stuck it to the tv so my Mum and brother would find it. They got the hint. We watched Touching Evil. My gosh these episodes are long. Also, really don't like Nicola's hair. I kept wanting to fix the fringe lol. My brother and I both had difficulty at times understanding both Nicola and Robson Greene so I think we will watch the first episode again with subtitles. I am not usually this bad with British accents but as I said my brain was fried, and I am tired from study and also sometimes I really do find the different accents hard (took me a bit to understand Catherine Tate in Season's Greetings too but I got there in the end).
There was a lot of blue. A lot. Like series eight Spooks lighting blue. I forgive Touching Evil however, as I choose to believe this is a stylistic effect meant to match the film noir genre. The music was very Hitchcocksian as well I noticed. Creegan is very interesting as a character and off the first episode I think Robson plays him well (and where the heck have I seen him before?). I still think Nicola improved her acting a lot post 90's but still I'm enjoying things so far and maybe Nicola's acting improves after the pilot (it is after all the pilot). I feel that in her early years she used her face too much and kind of ended up with stock expressions (you can see them repeated from Chalk to Touching Evil) much like HBC did too in her earlier acting years (and Burton still bitches about today. "BAH HELENA. STOP THOSE HYPERACTIVE EYEBROWS." Well. Burton would have a field day with Nicola.) I don't mean this as a negative because Nicola was always obviously gifted with acting, but I do think that at the moment, Robson's experience compared to Nicola's is showing. I do have to say though, that when I thought about it, I realised Nicola hasn't technically been acting for all that long in major roles, which makes her rapid mastery kind of special and amazing.
I did have some random 90's thoughts too like "gee was my phone really that brick like once upon not so long ago? Was short hair like that really cool? Did people actually ever like power suits?" etc Also, yay for me understanding German without a translation and yay for Inspector Rex memories. Touching Evil reminds me of good old Inspecter Rex. Anyone else ever watch that show? Also Creegen and Tayler... totally trying to out blue eye each other... it was kind of eerie how BLUE those guys eyes both are! Also who else thinks Nicola could have pulled off a LOTR elf in her younger years? Maybe thats just me...
Chris Lilley's Angry Boys got a whole lot better this week (how he can ever beat The Mr G musical from Summer Heights High is beyond me however) with the entrance of Jen Otataki as the Japanese American mum who packages her son's image for the fame and fortune, played so eerily accurate by Lilley that I started calling Lilley a her. The accent was also perfect. "I told Tim that if he did not succeed at skating, I would kill myself... luckily he did or he would have a dead Mum on his conscience." Also the Mucca Boys beach wars and the various tribal ways of signifying "war" eventually resolved by sending a text was LOL. Oh Lilley. I love you. Screw the haters. I'd like to see them pull of a Jai'mae or a Jonah or a Mr G or a Gran or a Jen or Patsy...

So would you say Touching Evil is worth watching? I'm looking for things Nicola's been in, we don't get to see her a lot on our TV screens over here, except for Spooks...

Date: 2011-06-01 09:54 pm (UTC)Chalk and Touching Evil are both very early things I would reccomend because they highlight a very different Nicola :)

Date: 2011-06-01 10:06 pm (UTC)I read many posts about Nicola in Being Human, so I think I'll try to watch it. Touching Evil sounds nice, I read a bit about the plot. :)
I've also seen her in a movie called "Shooting Dogs" and a TV drama called "Torn". Both were during the Spooks years, as you call them, and she was fantastic, especially in "Torn" (her part in "Shooting Dogs was minor, but memorable).

Date: 2011-06-01 10:24 pm (UTC)I watched the first ep of Torn and gave up. I need to be emotionally prepared first methinks. How did you watch Shooting Dogs? I haven't been able to find that.
Touching Evil is said to be the precursor to CSI and other shows of the like. I love crime drama and am enjoying so far.

Date: 2011-06-01 10:33 pm (UTC)Well, Torn isn't really cheering-up stuff, but I was stunned by Nicola's performance- so different from Ruth, and she broke my heart in several scenes.
Shooting Dogs was on French TV a couple of years ago, and miraculously in English. You don't get to see a lot of Nicola in it but she steals the movie when she's on screen- my opinion at least.

Date: 2011-06-02 10:39 pm (UTC)Nicola will def. break your heart in Luther! She's good at that. I described it once as a kind of "compelling honesty." I will try Torn again when I get back from overseas probably.
OMG HOW WEIRD IS THIS? Yesterday someone brought up Shooting Dogs in my politics and culture class and I was all HOMG NICOLA!!!! Would you reccommend Shooting Dogs to buy? I don't know wether or not to buy it in my region (It's available from my local dvd store)I think I was put off in the past by its similarity to the Australian mini series Answered by Fire (though both are on diff human rights issues) and I love ABF so much I now expect heaps from these types of things.

Date: 2011-06-02 11:11 pm (UTC)Oh, really? That's funny indeed! But did you watch the movie?
Well I don't know if I would recommend it to buy, as I don't know if re-watches would be interesting...
I don't remember the whole story actually, just that it's the first part in which I've seen Nicola other than Ruth and thought she was fantastic.
And as I haven't seen many movies that deal with these subjects I found the story interesting, but maybe you won't...

Date: 2011-06-03 12:41 am (UTC)Hmmm thanks for that. I'll try renting it from the video shop when I get back from overseas then :)
Did you end up seeing Being Human?

Date: 2011-06-03 09:57 am (UTC)No, not yet, I've been busy.
Btw, will it matter if I just watch Nicola's episode without having seen the rest of the series?

Date: 2011-06-07 04:19 am (UTC)I was told it didn't. I disagree with that. I had no idea of what was happening or who characters were or the significance of certain events in the parts that pertained to overall series arc. However, in terms of Nicola herself, she is a one off character and her story is standalone. So if you want to watch Being Human for just Nicola's role, you're fine but if you want to get everything... it's back to the beginning of Being Human with you... (that or wikipedia)

Date: 2011-06-07 10:58 am (UTC)Thanks. I searched a bit on Wikipedia and the series seems interesting so I'll probably watch it from the beginning and patiently wait for Nicola. :)

Date: 2011-06-09 08:03 am (UTC)Thanks so much for your review of Conversations final chapter! Makes me so happy to know people like that kind of thing and yeah... I always like to try and improve my writing, fic or fan fic.
I have like four series nine alt. ending wips on top of that Lucas/Tom/Ruth/3.7 fic LOL. They won't happen for another month or two I should imagine though...
Good luck with exams!

Date: 2011-06-09 11:11 am (UTC)Oh, series nine definitely led us to imagine alternatives, I guess. I have one for the whole series, and an alternate ending; I'll write them this summer... I wonder what you imagined.
Thank you so much for the luck! :)

Date: 2011-06-10 02:17 am (UTC)Omg write yours and we can see if we had the same ideas? Be so amazing if we did! I'll probably write mine when I am at Oxford so in a month or two basically :)

Date: 2011-06-10 12:24 pm (UTC)Yes, I would be so much fun if we had the same ideas! Gosh, you're so lucky to go to Oxford! Maybe being in England will inspire you even more to write Spooks fic. ;)
