Doctor Who The Eleventh Hour blogging
Apr. 20th, 2010 03:10 pmOH MY FREAKING GOD I WANT TO MARRY MATT SMITH AND STEPHAN MOFFAT AND HAVE THEIR BABIES. YEAH.
What a brilliant pilot episode, everything about this episode ruled, from the performances of both MS and Karen Gillan (already a far more interesting companion than Donna, Rose, Martha), to the cleverness of how the moff introduced us to Amy, to the way he played on our fears about MS taking over from DT to enhance the plot.
The rest under cut links for spoilers.
I fell in love with Matt Smith the second he appeared on the screen. "I'm a mad man with a box," bahahahha, I loved him so much for that moment... and the bit where he tells Amelia solemnly "You know when parents tell you everything is going to be alright when really they mean it isn't..."
Her: yeah
Him: Everything's going to be alright. (insane grin)
loved, loved, loved it!!!
In fact, I already love this guy better than David Tennant. Tennant's tenure as doctor was completely ruined by RTd and friends getting too big for their boots and having the show become some sort of weird worship tennant, not the doctor cult, also known to my friend as "the doctor is God,and he likes to whine about it alot" cult.
I loved how Amelia waited for the doctor, I loved how Amy "grew up" but still looked with wonder inside the TARDIS, I loved how the camera panned over her room filled with Doctor figures, I loved how The Moff included that past doctor's tribute, I loved how the show had a more 80's continuation who feel, I loved that I was crying tears of happiness at the end, because the show was no longer depressing and emo and whiny and because Matt Smith is so crazy and rougish and fun loving and clearly just out for an adventure and ok I'm going to stop fan girl squeeing now...
BUT DEAR GOD, BRING ON NEXT SUNDAY. I HAVE FOUND MY DOCTOR.

Date: 2010-04-20 02:59 pm (UTC)Seriously though, I was going to blog about the ep myself. For me the lines that summed it up were:
"That must be one hell of a scary crack in your wall". This showed the Dr despite all the weirdness of his regeneration and the tardis's crash etc, is still compassionate enough to take Amelia seriously and wise enough to recognise her fear despite the matter-of-fact way she tells him about it.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor". In 10 seconds the showcase of earth's enemies and the faces of his previous incarnations perfectly led to him popping through the hologram saying those words. It was the ideal way to link his current form back to his past incarnations and the history that Dr Who has for so many. Fantastic!

Date: 2010-04-20 10:00 pm (UTC)I just loved this so much! As you have probably noticed from previous blogs, myself (amongst many other who fans) were getting really peed off with the way that the previous scriptwriter RTD was turning The Doctor under Tennant into some weird whining, emo, cowardly wimp, and this resulted in what I consider to be one of the worst episodes in the history of new who coming about... The End of Time two parter. It was meant to be good and have DT go out in style. Instead it was lame and contrived and took away what the Doctor actually was. The way Tennant's Doctor was portrayed just never really appealed to me, and I always felt that he wasn't really The Doctor.
For me, Matt Smith IS The Doctor with his insanity and rougishness and sense of adventure. I think he was utterly brilliant and am with the fans who think he could easily be the best Doctor since Tom Baker.

I agree RT ruined a lot of things. But still, I do love DT. LOL. Don't ask me whyyy~

Date: 2010-04-25 06:09 am (UTC)For me, Matt Smith is a refreshing change that for me personally I think the show has needed for awhile. This pilot episode felt more old who inspired, and yet somehow fairylike and I really liked that, while Matt Smith channelled a more old fashioned Baker vibe too, which again I really liked (and apparently lots of others did too :P) I just needed this show before I jumped ship :/
