Sorry [livejournal.com profile] promethia_tenk I know I said I'd do this ages ago but assignments and actual fan fic writing got in the way.

1. How about a brief introduction of yourself?
I am Maureen. I have two half finished novels and far too much fan fic on my account on fan fic.net. Fan fic is so much fun to write though, especially if you really love a character.

2. And what got you into fanfiction to begin with?
Writing or reading? Reading was the Miranda Richardson forum and Mary Van Tassal fic (Sleepy Hollow). I then proceded to write two Mary one shots myself and a 23 000 word Mab fan fic.

3. What kind of fanfiction do you like to write?
I like to explore what if's alot and toy with certain scenes ever so slightly to give voice to the characters, especially in shows like Dr Who where there isn't always time for an amazing amount of character developement (that's how I started writing Lucy/Master fic). I like to write angst because it's fun and carthatic to write. I love writing Ruth Evershed Spooks fan fic because I feel like there's so much scope for whatever you feel like there and I find her easy to write for because I practically am her. I like writing dialogue (both in original fic and fan fic). I can get artsy *case in point The Wizard (River/Doctor fic). I like intertextual references that shed light on a character.

4. Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters? Or are you a fandom whore?
A fandom whore. I have written fic for Sleepy Hollow, Hallmark's Merlin, Harry Potter (for a request), Dr Who, Charlie's Angels (the embarassment :P) and Spooks. I mainly write Dr Who and Spooks fic but by far the most I've written for is Ruth/Harry in Spooks (DAMN YOU SPOOKS SERIES NINE DAMN YOU. I have six Ruth/Harry fics at the moment. The longest is unfinished at 14 000 words. I have about three more Ruth related plots that I havn't penned yet. Oh Spooks fandom.

5. What is your most popular fanfic and why do you think people like it so?
Harry Potter of course, for reasons not of quality but of the sheer size of that fandom. In terms of reviews in relation to size, my Ruth/Harry fic A Little Night Music has alot of reviews and so did my Mab one at the time.

6. Forget other people...what is the fanfic you've written that you're most proud of?
Definitely A Little Night Music for Spooks. It's a mix of humour and romance which was a challange for me but really fun to write. Seeings as I need to write lots of romance in my current novel I feel like I have learnt a surprising amount from the Ruth/Harry fluff fics I have read and written- possibly because the fandom is a wide mix of ages and so we have much more experienced, mature writers writing fluff and A Little Night Music is kind of like everything I have learnt. It's also got my favourite characters in it all at once which is always fun to write for. I feel like my writing has improved this year too.

7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing?
My own original writing is like pulling teeth because it's a completely new thing for me and I'm always learning. With a fandom that I like and characters I love, as long as I have a plot bunny it seems the easiest thing in the world to write a couple of thousand words in one sitting. The most difficult aspect of writing is making yourself sit down and write. Actually starting is always the hardest part.

8. Write a few sentences or so of your favorite pairing or character.
Er I can't do that sorry. Not without writing an entire fan fic. But the choice would be Ruth and Harry :P

9. Are there any fanfiction trends/cliches that you're sick of?
The number of times I have started reading a really great Ruth/Harry fic only for it to suddenly go wildly out of character I can't even... this problem has gotten especially worse in light of series eight and nine and certain people's refusal to accept what is blatant canon. This wouldn't be a problem in an AU fic (and it's not) but I can't stand it in what is a continuation of canon.

I really hate fan fic's which turn Ruth into an actual Mary Sue because my feminist nose gets sore and I hate it when people make Harry into a right bastard and have Ruth just accept that... again the feminism thing.

10. Are you guilty of any of these? Or have you committed other crimes?
My Harry Potter fic slipped towards the end in terms of character but that was because I wasn't keen on the fandom- I was writing for a request. Still wasn't good though. I have committed the Ruth/Harry canon fail crime once, but I seemed to be the only one bothered by it. The rest of the shippers loved it lol.

11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you continue to like/participate in it?
Sleepy Hollow and Merlin. Both at the same time. I like both movies but have no desire to write more fic's for them. My SH what if's and why's were exhausted and the Mab fic was a rewrite of the entire film so no more fic from me necessary.

12. Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them that you love to write.
I don't know if I really like the term OTP. It seems so exclusive to me and the whole point of fic writing is allowing people to come up with their own interactions and responses to fandoms and ships. Maybe that's just me?
I love writing Ruth/Harry because
a) RUTH IS GOD
B) RUTH IS GOD
C) RUTH IS GOD
Um but really;
a) Because I love writing Ruth so much and she is alot like me so I can explore myself in my fics a bit (if that makes sense?)
b) Spooks doesn't tell or even show, it implies and you have to fill in the gaps many a time. That's enormously fun.
c) Spooks is in the real world, and I enjoy taking a break from the fantasy of my novels to write in the real world for a bit.
d) because if anyone in Spooks deserve happiness (even if only non canon) it's Ruth Evershed.
My bias is much more to Ruth rather than Harry in case you hadn't noticed.

13. What would you call your writing "style"?
Er. My own? It changes. Sometimes it's all symbolic and fancy as in The Wizard. Sometimes it's straight forward and plain but I work hard to make everything flow for the reader. Sometimes it's poetic. Sometimes its laden with allegory and sadness. Depends.

14. Do you read other people's fanfics? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
All the time. I think I have read every single Ruth/Harry fic on fan fic.net in recent times plus the ones on lj that I've found that are Ruth anyone. [livejournal.com profile] zulu_ottawa your Ruth/Dimitri fic is the most amazing thing I've ever read. Seriously guys, much as I enjoy Ruth/Harry, I could get down with Ruth/Dimitri, Ruth/Ros, Ruth/Tariq (one of thes days I will write this), and even Ruth/Lucas. Someone do it. I ODD on the R/H sometimes or get annoyed at the characterisations and assumptions made post series nine.

15. Name one thing you'd LOVE to write but haven't yet.
My depressing Ruth/Harry fic that is yet to come to leaven out the fluff of A Little Night Music and the series five Team Tardis prompt fic that someone challanged me with (I have ideas for that but no time with leaving the UK)

16. Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have a really bloated ego?
I think everyone feels a little hurt at first but then usually I see that what the person is saying makes a great deal of sense and edit for them. For example, someone pointed out to me that my River fic was hard to read because of the formatting. Fair call. Another person pointed out it might be helpful to italicise certain thoughts. Again fair call. I've never had anyone criticise my actual writing though.

I did have someone criticise me rather hurtfully on my Bella/Draco HP fic ending but that was ridic. because they didn't read my story summary and my constant repetitions at the start of each chapter informing people I was writing a tragedy.

17. When you write is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
With fan fic I can do either, but novels silence is bliss.

18. What inspires you?
Great shows and great acting in the case of fan fic. In the case of novels, who knows where inspiration comes from?

19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and yourself as a writer?
LOTS OF LOVE AND FUN. A GREAT COMMUNITY. LOVE YOU ALL.

Is that ok?

*hugs you* Thank you for the compliment, hon. I love that you loved that fic. :D

Also, as I can see how much you ADORE her, have you read this? http://daygloparker.livejournal.com/1111815.html. AMAZING. BROKE MY HEART. JUST - it is possibly the best grasp on Ruth Evershed I have ever read. She gets it. So damn well.

OMG I KNOW THAT FIC IS GREAT AND YES I DID READ IT AND I GOT SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE AT THE END!

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH RUTH/ANYONE FIC IN THE WORLD. THERE MUST BE MORE.

Argh forgot to add- yours and daygloparker's are the two best Ruth fic's I've ever read. I was beginning to think I was the only one on fan fic.net (aside from one user who knows who they are) who actually was seeing Ruth in that way- like all of Ruth- not just up to 5.5 (prevents self from going off on fic bug bear rant again.)

My two most meta Ruth fic's are probably this one:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6482880/1/The_Black_Balloon (Ruth sees a counciller. God it's depressing.)

and this one:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6486917/1/A_Question_of_Colour (me attempting to give Ruth a happy ending but still having the angst in between lol)

Aw, thank you! It's always wonderful to find other people who understand Ruth in the same way I do; not to just see her as she is with Harry - I think a lot of people focus on that aspect of her character and don't see the whole sum: yes, she has something with Harry, but she also blames him for so much, especially now. She has anger, justifiable anger, and she has morality, and she feels intensely. And she's evolved, not just in terms of the relation with Harry, but in her life, in her thinking, in her personality. She's progressed, and reverted - she's been put through the wringer in so many ways. She is not the same person as in S2; evolution is important in a character, and though Ruth is still fundamentally Ruth, with her awkward traits and her morality and her brain, she has a sorrow now. I don't think the anger is new - I think that has always been there, in some form, a fire, for or against the job, the people in it, the justifications it and they make for things; the establishment's version of right and wrong verses her own. She's always had that conflict. But the sadness, after exile, after Cyprus, that is something which has dulled her slightly, and made the anger far more prominent, because it has personal reason now, I think.
So this is why I cannot give Harry and Ruth a chance, because of everything between them, and everything she sees in him from the job, and all the blame and reminders she has. I think people who don't see all of that and put them together all fluffily aren't really seeing how they work; yes, there is the awkwardness, yes, there are the looks; but they - they have barriers - they have reminders, and I feel like that creates a reluctance for any further romance between them. I'm not saying it can never happen, I'm just saying that it is on a much different plane than it was 7 years ago.

...I honestly didn't mean for this to be a ramble. All I was going to say was thank you for the compliment, and that your own fics are lovely. :)

I want to click the facebook like button for this entire paragraph of Ruthism. So true. I mean I have written a fluff fic for Ruth/Harry but its set in series freaking two and is non canon and back then Ruth was very different.

I realised when I was doing the Spooks meme the other day that I actually only liked Harry because Ruth did, not actually because of who he is as a character. Actually, it occurs to me that the more the series progress the less and less I like him. He kind of lost me the second he employed Ros.

I think Ruth is the most interesting female fictional character on TV. I love thinking about Ruth meta because there's so much to talk about with her. I def. think she is the most consistently developed character on Spooks.

NO FACEBOOK LINKING, PLEASE. I'd just rather not. Thanks.

LOL, I've been saying for years that Harry is a bastard. I mean, how can we think of him as a good guy, when he pulls stunts like revenge plots, or massacres a train in Tehran? I mean, REALLY? His morals are screwwwweeed. And he's so hypocritical, too, calling out his team when they do bad things, while he does the exact same things himself. *sigh* You didn't like him for Ros? BUT ROS IS ACE. S7, come on! I will admit, in her intro she was a bit aloof and put in a bad light because of her father, but I grew to like her pretty quick.

Ruth is fascinating. I love this show for the AMAZING characters it creates. They all have the potential for pages and pages of meta. They're so complex, no-one is two dimensional. She is the most consistently developed, yes. Harry often contradicts himself, Malcolm has gone (TO HIDE STATE SECRETS IN HIS GARDEN), so Ruth is the second longest running member. The others come and go, and while they're there, they often get pretty good development, but Ruth is just amazing. \o/

LOL I SAID FB LIKE NOT LINK. LOL LOL LOL.

No I loved Ros in the end! Series seven and eight she kicked ass! I just thought it was stupid he employed her so quickly post 5.5. And Yeah around series five or six the Harry bastard o meter went up exponentially.

OH, SORRY. MISREAD. I'm tired. LOL.

YAY YOU LOVED ROS! I think the quick employment was down to Adam's influence... I started to really not like Harry after he put that bomb in Tehran. UGH.

Also! Quote matching! Khalil Gibran's The Coming of a Ship within The Prophet \o/ WE WIN AT LIFE. Do you remember that quote from Spooks S3? With Ruth and dinner and that Andrew guy? "Don't you just love Abu Nuwas?" (Pause. Wrong poet, wrongpoetwrongpoet) "Why do you have to be so bloody good at what you do?" AGH. SHOW. J'ADORE.

And also, this: She still sees the faces; they float, projected before her. Jo's big blue eyes aren't in pain anymore and she can see straight through Ros to the vulnerability and the sensitivity beneath. Colin has an arm around Danny. Zaf holds Jo's hand. Lucas stands slightly behind Ros, his eyes are still confused but she thinks she sees his mouth move and she imagines his lips form "sorry."
CRYING. HON, THAT IS FABULOUS. Oh gosh, you got so, so, sooo much into about 3 sentences, and it is so Ruth. BRAVO.

No technically Ruth is also right. The name she says is the character who speaks the lines we both quoted plus she did in The Prophet. I want to buy that book. I think that poem is lovely. Also, on the topic of Andrew and 3.7 I rewatched one of the scenes on YT and OMG RUTH WANTS TO GO AWAY WITH ANDREW. SHE TELLS HIM WHEN HE FINDS HIS IDYLLIC PLACE TO TELL HER WHERE IT IS. EVEN BACK THEN SHE WAS DISILLUSIONED. AND DOUBLE OMG SHE DOES GET TO GO TO AN IDYLLIC PLACE BUT IT'S NOT WHAT SHE WANTS IN THE END. ALSO, ALSO SHE SAYS AT THE END TO DANNY "PROMISE ME WE'LL NEVER BE THAT BITTER AND ALONE." I love it when Spooks preemts itself and makes character driven sense :P

Glad you liked the fic? :P I'm addicted to Ruth fic meta clearly ;)

Oh! Thank you for that literary knowledge, I didn't know that. Interesting!

The fic was good.

Probably not- but it's a neat kind of symmetry anyway :P

I'm pretty sure Ruth ALWAYS sees her dead compatriots everywhere. I'm pretty sure she still talks to Danny when no one is around :( I wonder if the show will deal with the Danny and Ruth thing before the end of the show? I think it could be good to do so. I really feel like most of series eight/nine Ruth is a continuation of feeling too keenly and not ever having time to grieve. And that's why the ending of the fic you linked me to is so great. Ruth was envious of what Danny and Zoe had, even if it was only ever one sided and then Zoe got kicked off the Grid and everyone just kind of pretended Danny being in love with Zoe didn't matter and it didn't- not in terms of being a Spook- but it mattered to Ruth. Being human has always mattered to Ruth. It's like she's fighting the whole time to prevent the job from swalloing her up but the more she tries, the more it does.

From: [identity profile] zulu-ottawa.livejournal.com
Oh, that is brilliant. Because she so, so, so is the job, no matter how hard she fights it; and this becomes anger too, in that her morality doesn't match that of MI-5's. She is the human side of the job, she is the reminder of that. To lose it is to lose her.

How would you feel about Ruth/Tariq or Ruth/Lucas... I can't find it anywhere and I would love it like you wouldn't believe

:/ Ruth/Tariq - With them I feel like it's more of a friendship. Ruth/Lucas is a definite no, unless it is to just talk about what a bastard Harry is. ;P

From: [identity profile] dweomeroflight.livejournal.com
In my head Tariq likes Ruth but obv. Ruth would not like Tariq in the same way. I think Tariq idolises her. Hestia agrees with me. Don't judge :P Lucas/Ruth precisely for the Harry bastard fun that could be had.

I take it you go in for more Ruth/Dimitri then? WHY DID THEY NOT USE THE GREECE LINK FOR RUTH/DIMITRI INTERACTION. WHY? Oh show.

Date: 2010-12-20 06:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zulu-ottawa.livejournal.com
Oh, yes, Tariq idolises her. I just think she finds him endearing as a friend, is all. LOL, yes, Lucas and Ruth could complain about Harry for hours.

I suppose I do. IDK. Oh, yay, Greece, a tenuous connection! THEY SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN GREEK, DAMMIT. And I feel like Dimitri sort of is a moral boy with a conscious and a heart, and feels things a lot like Ruth does. Don't know where I got that from.

Hey! Thanks for doing this. It was great to hear from you.

the Miranda Richardson forum
<3 her--it's always such a treat to discover she's in something

Do you mean those fics that kind of give you the perspective of a certain character in a particular scene? I looooove when someone does a good and unexpected job with one of those.

My own original writing is like pulling teeth because it's a completely new thing for me and I'm always learning. With a fandom that I like and characters I love, as long as I have a plot bunny it seems the easiest thing in the world to write a couple of thousand words in one sitting.
Huh. Interesting that you should have a difference like that. I don't think I've heard that from anyone else although, admittedly, I've not heard from very many people.

Because I love writing Ruth so much and she is alot like me so I can explore myself in my fics a bit (if that makes sense?)
I think most people do this at least sometimes--whether they realize it or not. We are all stuck in our own heads, after all.

I did have someone criticise me rather hurtfully on my Bella/Draco HP fic ending but that was ridic. because they didn't read my story summary and my constant repetitions at the start of each chapter informing people I was writing a tragedy.
I haaaaaaaate when someone's comments indicate that they haven't been paying good attention--to anything.

Yes I mean those fics that give you the perspective of a certain character in a certain scene :P

Yeah but do many others write both original and fan fic? Maybe it's just me? I honestly think its because the groundwork in a fan fic is already done for you and that can sometimes be the hardest part of a novel fic.

I agree. We all impose parts of ourselves into our writings but I can do it to an extreme extent with Ruth because she is so like me that I can simply write scenes from my own life in and it will sound authentic BECAUSE WE ARE THE SAME PERSON. Even my Mum calls me Ruth sometimes.

I KNOW. IT IS SO ANNOYING. READ MY HEADERS DAMN IT. THEN YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED FOOLS.
