Destination Britain HELP!!!
Dec. 14th, 2009 10:43 amOk so i'm going on exchange for 6 months to Britain on uni exchange (at last my anglophile dream comes true) and I've started making a list of cool places I want to go, but I was thinking I should throw it out to lj to ask people for ideas, because more heads is better than one. I love history and the english literature of Britain so suggest whatever you want :)
This is my list so far... some things I admit, are embarassingly nerdy ;)
Places to Go
- Stonehenge/Avesbury stone monument
- Buckingham Palace
- Parliament House
- London open decked bus tour
- West End plays (fingers crossed for a famous person being on stage when I go)
- Belsize Park
- The London Eye?
- Madame Tausaud's
- Tintagel Castle, Cornwell
- Where they filmed LOM/A2A Manchester
- Glastonbury Tor (coz its an Arthurian site supposedly :P)
- The Lake District
- Agatha Christie Museum Torquay (nerdy I know)
- Shakespeare play perfomed in a castle :P
- The Beatles Abbey Road/Museum/Liverpool
- London Tower
- Notting Hill/Portobello Rd?
- Edingburgh Castle, Scotland
- Hadrian's Wall
- Giant's causeway
- Bath
- The Globe Theatre?
Any suggestions are much appreciated :)

Date: 2009-12-14 03:14 am (UTC)How are you at walking? When I went it was either public transport or shanks pony so make sure you have some good shoes:-)
The London bus is a good one since the tickets you buy are for 24 hours so you can get on and off as often as you want and can also do a river cruise as far as Greenwich(You have to go to the observatory). If you go on a cruise in the other direction you can go to Hampton Court(got some lovely gardens)While in London you may want to take a trip to Camden Market and pop across the lock just north for more markety goodness. If you like stairs, you may want to climb the Monument and to the top of St Pauls.
Other stair related spots: Salisbury Cathedral- climb the tower; Edinburgh - the Sir Walter Scott Monument. Edinburgh I think has more museums per square foot than any place I know so there is no end of places to visit. Once you have done the Castle you can walk the Royal Mile and check out Holyrood Palace.
You may be interested in seeing the Uffington Chalk Horse or visiting Windsor Great Park after walking the Long Walk from Windsor Castle. These were two things on my list that I missed out on.
There is the Eden Project in Cornwall. I had to visit a Cornish fishing village(Mevagissy) and found a beautiful garden called Heligan quite close by. Really worth a look if you are out that way(and this is a guy speaking so you have to know it was impressive for me to laud it)
I did my Shakespeare in Stratford(perfect day)
When in the Lakes District are you going to visit the home of Beatrix Potter?
There is so much to do I could have stayed a year and still not got everything I wanted to do done.

Date: 2009-12-14 04:05 am (UTC)I am pretty good with walking, but I am aiming to get a bit fitter before I actually leave ;)
and yes, I am definitely visiting the home of Beatrix Potter :) and the Cornwall fishing village you mentioned sounds great.
It seems so far away sigh, and I'm already so excited to get over there but then I think that the time will pass quicker than I think by the time I've organised everything.
I've added all of your ideas to my list at home, thanks heaps :)

Date: 2009-12-14 04:22 am (UTC)I'm actually more excited about Avebury than I am about Stonehenge, mainly thanks to Mary Stewart and The Crystal Cave :P You can tell from my list of places I want to go to that I am a first class history/fantasy nerd lol.
That would be awesome. I'm going to go read your first 12 days now :)
