Short story/drabble plus books
May. 20th, 2011 11:38 pmWell I joined
lj_scribe and the prompt for this week was "living the dream." This is what I came up with where I was using the prompt metaphorically and no this is not based off anything real lol. It's just out of my messed up head.
Also, I dedicate this to Carol
cianthecat because she has so much faith in my writing.
Title: The Actress is the Dream
Word Count: 252
I suppose I was staring, but what else was a girl to do? After all, she was the star and I was star struck.
I guess I didn’t expect to notice the thin, claw like fingers, the age spotted skin that was somehow still fabulous, the soft wavy hair that framed her in the camera as Asian, Jewish, English Rose and back again depending on what they wanted. I didn’t expect the spark of recognition in her eyes.
“I can’t believe you’re here again... why didn’t you tell my agent... get a pass organised or something?”
Maybe because I don’t know you, Miss Larger Than Life, Miss Famous Lady That People Get Proud And Lucky To Meet. Maybe because last time it was only the once? I don’t say that of course. I shrug my shoulders.
I notice there are crowfeet around her eyes, I notice she looks tired. It comes out and I shock myself with my audacity, “You look thin.” I can’t conceal the disapproval.
She doesn’t reply. There’s no one else around. She draws her arm around me confidingly and I think I see tears. “It’s a load of crap you know.”
“Why didn’t you opt out? Twelve series is a lot.”
She smiles, that battling, brittle smile that gets to everyone Sunday night on the tele. “Too late now isn’t it.”
She clutches on tight to my hand, maybe tighter than she should (from one fan to another) and I hold on too.
Like I said, star struck.

I like the idea of being propmted every week... surely it can only be a good thing for my writing yes?

Date: 2011-05-21 09:58 pm (UTC)I sympathize, I haven't written anything in my own novel in the past three months,I'm so busy I can't even work on my fanfics... Hopefully this summer will be more quiet.
Still, keep believing (i don't know if that's english )! =)

Date: 2011-05-25 08:07 am (UTC)I work on fan fics and poetry coz otherwise I would go insane but I don't think there's much hope of me writing any more novel until I'm back in Oz in August after Oxford and even then it is doubtful it will come along fast...
What is your novel about?

Date: 2011-05-25 12:22 pm (UTC)Oh, well there's two novels actually, and I don't know which one I should focus on- it's driving me mad!
It's difficult to summarize, the first one is a comedy mixed with a bit of mystery, it's about cousins gathering in the village they come from after their uncle's death.
The second is more serious, it's inspired by a scene I witnessed two years ago, and I built a plot around it- it's about an English woman who lives in France with her French husband but he treats her badly, and the novel is about her story, why she accepts it, what drove her there...
Sorry about the long comment! :)
What are your novels about?

Date: 2011-05-25 12:31 pm (UTC)The verse novel is set in Sydney Australia and is a murder mystery. I have written bits and pieces and mapped out the story but it has come to a grinding halt as I need to check out some Sydney locations and haven't had the chance.
My first novel is two thirds written but needs serious reworking. It is a fantasy novel set in a parallel universe and our universe and is about two girls who have to figure out how their lives are connected to the fantasy world in order to save both places.
The second one is a lot better written and is a rework of the fairy story Snow White and Rose Red but also involves dwarfs and revolution, magical manipulative brothers, power play and deceptions, princes (though neither one is who they seem) and at its heart it is a phychological thriller/tragic horror romance.

Date: 2011-05-25 01:45 pm (UTC)You have a writing style that keeps me reading.
Also, I read your Spooks fic "conversations" on ffnet and I loved it. I wanted to tell you but I didn't know where to say it. =D
I think I'll leave a review, my pen name there is LadySilverDoe.

Date: 2011-05-25 09:56 pm (UTC)So, I reviewed your fic, and it sort of turned into a mini-essay, for which I apologize. :) I don't know it this is about exams approaching, but everything I write turns into an essay these days... Anyway, I think you'll figure out I enjoyed it. =P

Date: 2011-05-25 10:03 pm (UTC)I agree. Why the heck did they not play up Ruth/Lucas more? I am actually going to eventually write the fic where we get more Lucas/Ruth- after exams lol. And John/Lucas equals worst Spooks story ever. I didn't buy any of it for a second lol.
Yeah sometimes Spooks is really bad at explaining the why of things imo.

Date: 2011-05-25 10:11 pm (UTC)Ab-so-lu-te-ly! Plus the two actors were fantastic together, and we really needed to see Lucas have a good dynamic with someone, since Ros was gone and that Maya woman was bloody awful, worse than Caulfield (!).
John/Lucas = nonsense. What went through their minds? I will always wonder...
Yeah that's right, I thought series 6 was the worst series they could ever make (seemed to me they turned Adam into crap), but Series 9 writers managed to destroy Lucas even more...
So looking forward to Ruth/Lucas fic! =)

Date: 2011-05-25 10:19 pm (UTC)Wow- we must be a similar Spooks viewer. Series six was my least fave series too. Probably still is, followed by nine. It was recently on ABC and on a rewatch the plot holes were even worse :P I don't think I would both to rewatch nine if it wasn't for Nicola Walker being acting goddess!
Yeah so am I- sometimes I ODD on the Ruth/Harry. I am also going to post the last chapter of Conversations tomorrow hopefully :)

Date: 2011-05-26 07:51 am (UTC)You are right, the plots in S6 are worse but S9 angered me more. The actors saved the show, otherwise I would've stopped watching.
I ship Ruth/Harry but I was like "Oh, never thought about Ruth/Lucas, but with a dynamic like that it could've been nice" when I was watching 9.8. =)

Date: 2011-05-26 08:54 am (UTC)I'm more worried about Ruth. They touch Ruth I never watch the show again beyond series seven :P S6 was the lamest but s9 angered me the most too actually. I agree. The actors saved what was a very mediocre season.
Ruth/Lucas could have been really interesting. I also have like four wips that are alternative endings to s9. So yeah. I guess I was pretty angered.

Date: 2011-05-26 09:21 am (UTC)Same, now Ros and Lucas are gone, Ruth is definitely my favourite character, hopefully they won't turn her into nonsense as they did with Lucas, or kill her... I always had a crazy hope that if someone survived all this, it would be her...
Oh, I'd love to read that. It'd be nice to have a fic where they escape together, Ruth being tired of this never-ending "Will they, won't they?" business with Harry. God, I feel inspired now, I might actually write it. =D

Date: 2011-05-27 12:35 am (UTC)I've decided that if s10 ruins things further I am going to stop all rewatches at s7 because that means Ros and Lucas are still alive being amazing together as a team, Lucas never has those lame gf's or weird backstories, Jo is still alive, Harry is still bad ass rather than annoying (I found him so irritating in nine) and Ruth is still in Cyprus with George and Nico (I always believed that Ruth had to have loved George to some extent in order to live with him even if he wasn't loved in the same way as she loves Harry). Then Harry can get over Ruth in my head and marry someone else.
This be my show canon if everything goes tits up XD
I'm off to do some readings and then I shall write more Conversations for you :P

Date: 2011-05-27 10:16 am (UTC)I understand what you mean, Harry "practised self-pity" a little bit too much in s9, hope they'll fix it in s10.
Well, I really like Harry actually, because I love Peter Firth's acting, if nothing else, and what I like about the Harry/Ruth relationship is that it's a bit 19th century like, something you don't see much these days, and it makes them special.
Nevertheless, I would like Ruth to be developed in other contexts than her relationship with Harry and that's why I think it would be interesting to write her with other characters in fic.
I'm currently rewatching Spooks from the beginning (I'm at 2.2), and I'm considering skipping Series 6 (but I'll probably watch it anyway because of Ros and Connie, and just skip Adam's scenes xD), and Series 9, because the more I think about it, the more I hate what they've done. I know many people didn't like S8, but I do, actually.
If s10 is a total mess, I'll stop "my" show at 8.8 and then imagine Ros survived, Lucas is still Lucas, and Harry and Ruth... well I don't know, I still want them to get together. :)
Actually I have a fic plan about "s9 as I would've liked it to be". Will probably write it this summer.

Date: 2011-05-27 12:52 pm (UTC)I like s8 too :) The art direction and camera work was shoddy but there was still Ros/Lucas teamwork, Ruth backstory, Harry angst and Jo being awesome to enjoy. Oh and Tariq tshirt remarks. Happy days.
That is so weird. My Mum and I just watched 2.5 and 2.6 then. Those were the days. s2 is my fave series probably and it had the best team imo. I always thought the show never truly recovered from losing Zoe and Danny till about s7.
DO IT. I WILL READ IT FOR SURE.

Date: 2011-05-27 12:59 pm (UTC)2.5 is just awesome, it's one of my favourite episodes!
And Tom/Zoe/Danny = dream team, although, as I started watching with s7, I tend to think the "real team" is Ros/Lucas, with Jo, and they're still my favourites. =)
I still miss Zoe sometimes, I kinda hoped she'd come back, but I guess it's too late now, and Danny is so... well I don't know the word but I loved him.

Ohhh yay. Can't wait to see if you can guess the last chapter ;)

Date: 2011-05-27 01:16 pm (UTC)I said Ros&Jo, but the others reviewers didn't seem to agree with me on that one...
Everyone said Harry&Ruth, but you already wrote one so I don't think I'll be that... It all depends, if it's series 8 context, then I go for Ros&Jo.
Miss Ros too so much! Haha the fork! I also love when she threatens the FSB guy with a pen in 7.1 and he's terrified. :)

Date: 2011-05-20 04:50 pm (UTC)And you're reading Gaiman, huh? Are you doing what I did, reading it as preparation and research for the upcoming ep, or did you just feel like reading a book by him? :)
I myself am currebtly reading American Gods, a few chapters in so far, really rather like it. ^^

Date: 2011-05-20 10:44 pm (UTC)I did it for research :P
SO far I have read The problem of Susan, most of Smpoke and Mirrors, The graveyard book and Anansi Boys. Pretty good effort seeings as his ep is tonight!
How is American Gods?

Date: 2011-05-21 07:49 am (UTC)Oh, AG is so far really good. It's odd and strange, and I don't find it laugh-out-loud funny, but then it don't need to be. It's sort of quietly amusing, while being quite fascinating and I keep getting wanting to read more when I have to put it down. So yeah. It's good. ^^
Was Anansi Boys good? I'm thinking of reading that one next. :)
