Dr Who Love

It's things like this that remind me why;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggppYfXSGdg&feature=related

a) Dr Who is the greatest fandom in the universe ever!
b) The frik don't I live in the UK so I can go to these things?
c) How great Murry Gold has consistently been as composer and omfg if my brother doesn't get me the series five soundtrack for my birthday I will kill him ;)
d) How much I can't flipping wait for series six to air April 30th here!

Having played the alto saxophone for nine years, I do love soundtracks of any kind. One of my Eastern Europe tour highlights was going to a Viennese Orchestral Concert and talking shop with another musical guy on my tour. It does surprise me though that a tv show can have such a cinematic sounding soundtrack which let's face it, is better than a lot of the stuff we hear out of Hollywood.

Karen Gillan was right in the first part of the Proms when she said that this kind of thing is something kids will remember for the rest of their lives. It's just so epic!

I haven't enjoyed Dr Who this much since I was a little kid watching dodgy VCR library copies of old Who with my Dad and brother. I love that this new new series is a fairytale of hope and that the soundtrack reflects this. I am the Doctor is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard and it and Amy's Theme can move me to tears (the only other composer who has managed that is the great Danny Elfman in films like Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow).

Oh why don't I just say it. WELCOME BACK DR WHO. WELCOME BACK.

DREAD THE 30TH GUYS. THERE WILL BE SQUEE ALL OVER THIS LJ.

I've been insisting Nicola Walker should be involved in some capacity with Dr Who for ages. She's apparently the lead female voice in the next Dr Who audio adventure according to her unoffical website!!! I think I will explode with fannish happiness! Now if only The Moff could get her into an actual episode... :P

ps: On the topic of New Who, I started listening to the free Guardian radio play read by Matt Smith and Claire Corbett today and it rocks this city!

Oh Eleventy. I love you. Can't wait for the end of April. SERIES SIX. GUYS. SERIES SIX.

I just finished reading Philip Pullman's new book 'The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundral Christ.' Now don't get me wrong. I love Philip Pullman. He is the brilliant writer who brought me both His Dark Materials and The Sally Lockhart quartet (two series that are in my top five of all time). But this book? I can't help but feel Pullman was being lazy.

In other news: more fandom gender fail. Someone is trying to tell me that Ruth Evershed from Spooks is a Mary Sue because she is 'too smart and no one is that perfect.' Wow. I actually am really insulted by the stupidity of this statement. The implication of this statement being that 'real women' arn't smart and that intelligence in a woman is a negative trait.

ASIDE: This is actually insulting to everyone who happens to be smart, let alone women who happen to be smart. It reminds me of the whole bullying culture I experienced in Primary School because smart was associated with negativity and uncool. I mean REALLY. REALLY HAS THE WORLD DEGENERATED TO THE POINT WHERE INTELLIGENCE IS NOW A BAD THING?

Also, how the heck is Ruth a perfect character? Are we watching the same show? Ruth is only a perfect character if we measure perfection by a woman's intelligence. It's not like Ruth is young, glamorous, drop dead gorgeous and abounding in confidence or anything. It's not like the entire point of the complexity of the character of Ruth is her intelligence and analytical skills as offset by her extreme social skills fail. It's not like Ruth represents a whole group of women who fight shyness all the time and really freaking associate with her love life fail. Not at all.

Ironically, back when I was onto series five of Spooks I wrote this re Ruth: River and Alex are who I wish I'd be when I'm in my 30's, but Ruth is who I am, or at least who I'm heading towards. In fact, I would argue that Ruth is one of the most realistic female characters I have seen on TV ever. Guess I was way off about realistic women eh guys?

Rant under cut.

This was bound to happen eventually. Also, only I could find a way to relate River/Doctor to Merlin in his Crystal Cave. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brendanpodger for making me think about River in a different way.

There is no smut or dangerous stuff so no worries there.

OMFG I AM IN A PERMANENT STATE OF FLAILING IN CAPS LOCK AT THE WIN THAT WAS LAST NIGHT'S SEASON FINALE. LIKE WOW. THAT'S HOW A SEASON FINALE IS DONE. ALSO, IF THERE IS ANYONE LEFT WHO DOES NOT LOVE RIVER AFTER LAST NIGHT THEY ARE CERTIFIABLY INSANE (SO ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT SHIP HER AND DOCTOR ELEVEN AFTER THAT END SCENE). ALSO, ALSO, RORY. AMY. OMFG IT ALL CAME DOWN TO A LITTLE GIRL WHO WAITED AND REMEMBERED. OMFG I CANNOT FIND THE WORDS TO EXPRESS MY LOVE RIGHT NOW OTHER THAN OH MOFFAT YOU BIG, AWESOME, WONDERFUL, EVIL, TEASE.

I will write a proper Big Bang review when my brain is stitched back together off the floor.

*Goes off to look at pictures and get a costume together*

Also, I love dressing up as Alex because I feel sexy as hell dressing like her. That woman has fine taste.

Expect a cross of these piccies...

You guys must be good for me. I have never admitted to my cos playing Alex to anyone before!

DR WHO TOMORROW SQUEEE

I realise I didn't review The Lodger but thats because I was in Melbourne meeting Tim Burton twice and shaking his hand and saying words to him and all, and meeting Brendanpodger and all. And then it was my brother's 18th and I'm going overseas on August 10th for 5 months (where's my panic button and all?) and yeah. The Lodger felt like a filler episode to me anyway. It was fluffy and funny is probably my overall opinion.

Now review (Spoilers...)

Ok guys, I know I havn't reviewed Dr Who since Vampires in Venice but there is a reason. Actually there's a few reasons.

a) I'm going overseas for 5 months which equals lots of stress and organisation and no lj
b) I'm meeting up with online fandom friends next week for the Burton exhibition in Melbourne and have been trying to work out that (Oh fandom friends- some of these guys are really good friends, never mind that I've never met them in person before.)
c) Amy Choice onwards Dr Who has been getting more and more complex with more and more going on and its getting harder for me to have any coherent thoughts after one viewing.

But Vincent and The Doctor was so awesome that I'm writing a review.

On Fandom

Ok first off, I've defriended the Doctor Who comm because I am so sick and tired of the Amy whinging that is going on along with the Moffat is a sexist writer and I want RTD back bullshit.

So first off I am going to state here, on my lj, my biases. I believe that if anything Moffat is feminist when he writes Dr Who, and that is obvious regardless of his personal views in interviews which may come across as sexist. I have already gone on at great length about how Amy and River are both feminist characters and I am not going through it all again.

One thing that I really feel the need to point out though, is the double standard that is going on here because RTD wrote some very sexist endings for all three of his companions. Before I start I want to make some things clear;

1. I loved Rose to bits mainly because I loved the way Billie acted to bits
2. Martha is my favourite companion other than Amy
3. I don't love or hate Donna
4. I enjoyed many RTD episodes of new who and this is not an RTD bash.

Thoughts on sexism in the RTD era under cut link for spoilers to all four season finales and the Christmas specials

Onwards to Spooks.

Ok. I think that I now love Ruth Evershed more than I even love Riversong or Alex Drake. River and Alex are who I wish I'd be when I'm in my 30's, but Ruth is who I am, or at least who I'm heading towards. In fact, I would argue that Ruth is one of the most realistic female characters I have seen on TV ever.

Note: I would also like to add that whichever author from deepgenre who claimed that if you turned down the sound on a tv program you could tell it was just actors acting and responding to cues, you are so wrong and are clearly not watching the correct programs. Nicola Walker, I really cannot express how much I love you, but you act so realistically that I feel like Ruth is a real person, sound or no sound. To demonstrate however, how wrong that authors sentiment was, I would also like to add that I watched a Martha Jones episode of Dr Who with the sound off and the acting was still realistic. Clearly this author needs to watch herself some BBC.

Anyway back to Spooks. Last time I blogged at the end of season four, the amount of people who had left the show in whatever heartbreaking way and were main characters had gone up to 7. Yeah, well I'm onto episode three of season five, and that number has gone up to 8. The person who left was a great character too. I liked him alot. Now I know why there were so many anguished imdb fans talking about him :(

ZOMG THE NOT SO INNER FAN IN ME NEARLLY DIED OF FANNISH GOODNESS YESTERDAY. Ahem. Ruth and Harry went on a date.

Harry: If I were to go on a holiday, I'd go to Paris.
Ruth: No New York! Where's your sense of Atlanticism?
Harry: Where's your sense of romanticism? (stares at Ruth intently)

Also when he asked her out, Nicola Walker's expressions were priceless. I repeat: I love her muchly.

Screecaps:

Harry: would you like to have dinner one night?
Ruth: I'm, I'm sorry?

Harry: Dinner?

oh my that expression :)

and that one...

That sequence of expressions is priceless. Anyway so is this (after she says yes)

Ok, sorry for the screencap spam but my squee is great right now :P I love Ruth and Nicola Walker!

I've written 1000 words of my 2000 word essay! Yay? That means I can post here :)

Ok so before I start, I do have a life beside Doctor Who but at the moment I have no time at all for proper posts about anything because I have 5 weeks left of uni and no exams, so all of my big assignments are crammed across the 5 weeks. Let's just say its been an insane semester, hence why my lj posts are few and far between.

Reaction under spoilers for those who have their heads under rocks and still havn't seen the episode or somehow have avoided the spoilers of who is returning...

This is really only happening for two reasons;

a) because I want to share my master playlist with [livejournal.com profile] blackpearl_phan

and because

b) lets face it. Sometime between last year and this year I became an insane Whovian fan. You know, one of those scary ones, who will probably be a Who fan for life and go around trying to convert the world.

I also wanted to talk briefly about The Beast Below and some thoughts I've had about the difference between season five and earlier seasons if anyone cares... lol

OH MY FREAKING GOD I WANT TO MARRY MATT SMITH AND STEPHAN MOFFAT AND HAVE THEIR BABIES. YEAH.

What a brilliant pilot episode, everything about this episode ruled, from the performances of both MS and Karen Gillan (already a far more interesting companion than Donna, Rose, Martha), to the cleverness of how the moff introduced us to Amy, to the way he played on our fears about MS taking over from DT to enhance the plot.

The rest under cut links for spoilers.

yeah what can I say other than uni is a bitch?

I want to start off by saying that I am so so SO relieved that Matt Smith is getting rave reviews as The Doctor. The second I heard he was cast I was dancing around the room, singing for joy. Apparently some have said he is the best Doctor since Tom Baker(or has the potential to be) and may even be the greatest! Take that DT fans who wouldnt give this guy a chance. Take that. It's not that I hate David Tennant, it's just that I grew to really hate his whingy whiny man pain cry baby crap by the Donna season and that by the shit that was the end of time part 2 I really just wanted change. Besides, I feel a little smug I must admit. I already was a bit of a Matt Smith fan before he was ever contending to be the next Doctor. I have stated in blogs here before that he is REALLY AMAZING as Jim Tayler in Ruby in the smoke and shadow in the north. I also said that I thought he had huge potential as The Doctor; what whith his roguish Jim charm and fun loving effect. I kinda can't quite believe how excited I am for him to be The Doctor.

I gave the world half way through season five to jump on the MS bandwagon. Looks like it could be even less than that. Oh how fickle we Whovians are.

By the way, the MS episode airs in two weeks here. The clock ticks away in silent agony. or to quote emilie autumn

4 oclock 4 oclock
out of bed I creep
to climb this tower of shame
but the hours still the same
only madness knows my name
at 4 oclock.

Speaking of EA I went to her concert about 2 weeks ago. She was amazing!!! and speaking of Time not moving, I really wish the ABC would give us an air date for Ashes to Ashes already. My family is trying to fill the gap with Spooks. As good as Spooks is, it dosent work. The whole time we say to ourselves Keeley Hawes... tee hee she still sounds like ALEX DRAKE... oh damn... now we're back to A2A speculating again.

I am slowly going crazy one two three four five six switch.

Really. That. is. how. I. feel. about. this. wait.

By the way is anyone else having kittens about how A2A will end without undermining LOM or being gimmicky. I have dialogues in my head like this.

How can they make an ending as groundbreaking, as touching, as bittersweet, as PERFECT as Lom

They are brillant scriptwriters. After all, wasn't A2A going to be epic fail? Besides havn't they had this ending planned since the end of LOM?

Yes, but what if they fuck up and there was that interview where Keeley mentioned they pander to fans. What if they pander in a bad way, in a Dr who end of time way?

But then Keeley also says its a beautiful, bittersweet ending that her husband cried in. Keeley is cool (Lordy how times have changed. To think there was a time when I hated her for the crime of not being John Simm. If I ever met her I'd have to apologise profusely). Therefore she must be right.

But what if my expectations are too high. I mean so many things have been fail this year. Alice in Wonderland (what were you thinking Burton? NEVER WORK WITH DISNEY EVER AGAIN), The Silver Mage, Dr Who End of Time. And the scriptwriters say they answer questions. What if they answer to many questions and ruin the fun of guessing things like wether Sam was in a coma or not and who Frank Morgan was.

TRUST THE DAMN SCRIPTWRITERS. THEY HAVE GIVEN YOU FOUR NEAR PERFECT SEASONS SO FAR.

and then I start off all over again. Please tell me someone is going through the same mental agony I am going through right now.

It would be alright if there was anything decent on TV to watch to distract myself with, but Dr Who dosent air for another 2 weeks, there's no news on Foyles War or Spooks or Robin Hood season three and right now I kinda want to go and kill the bloody idiot who thought it would be a good idea to take forever airing season three of A2A (and yes I know it just aired in the UK, but with my luck the ABC won't air it here till July, WHEN IM FUCKING OVERSEAS. That would really be the last straw. I'd rent it out in England and watch it in my God damned Youth Hostel.)

Rant over. But God, please tell me someone feels my pain.
